An installation in the pilotis and outdoor areas of the Japan Pavilion at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia 2025, curated by architect Jun Aoki. Taking as its point of departure the relationship between the pavilion’s architectural elements and the human body, the project focuses on architecture before it is fixed as meaning or function—environment as event. Through planting, lighting, and material operations, SUNAKI gives tactile presence to architectural elements that lack physical substance, including the experience of walking, the square opening cut into the floor, and the reflection of light.

A copper mirror-finished saucer installed at the center of the pilotis, directly beneath the square opening that connects the exhibition hall and the pilotis. The curved mirror surface converts spotlights from the pilotis ceiling into parallel light, projecting a square-shaped light image onto the ceiling of the exhibition hall through the opening. At the same time, when viewed from the exhibition space, reflected light rises from below the opening, creating an effect reminiscent of an artificial sun.The lighting is synchronized with moments in the looped video work (17 minutes 33 seconds) by Asako Fujikura and Takahiro Omura, in which the “hole” is referenced. The surface of the saucer bears patterns sampled from photographic records of ceramic fragments excavated during the construction of the Japan Pavilion.Fabrication was commissioned to Alcarol, a design workshop based in Belluno near the Dolomites.Beyond its function as a lighting device, the work incorporates fluctuations left by the fabrication process and gradual discoloration of copper over the six-month exhibition period, allowing its surface to continuously reflect the surrounding environment.

A group of planted pots distributed along the gently sloped circulation path that wraps around the Japan Pavilion, which is built on a hillside site.
Rather than treating architecture as form, this work considers architectural experience itself as a component of the building, placing the act of walking in dialogue with the structure. Instead of following the exact geometry of the existing path, the placement of the pots is determined by an ellipse computationally approximated in CAD.The plants require daily care, and the unglazed clay pots are vulnerable to breakage through contact or transportation. In fact, approximately 95% of the pots were damaged during shipment from Japan.SUNAKI does not eliminate the mismatches and deviations that emerge between planning and events; broken fragments were repaired with copper foil and left in place as part of the installation.

An automatically generated dialogue system running on iPhones, synchronized with the video work shown in the exhibition space. While maintaining an identical script structure to the video, the dialogue content is generated in real time for each loop, producing different conversations every time the work is experienced. The project aims for the sensation of a film that is structurally the same, yet never identical—an experience that changes with each viewing.

The pamphlet sold on site for €2 includes conversations between the curator and participating artists, exhibition explanations, script excerpts, and an outline of the automated dialogue system. The stand was designed by SUNAKI to match the pamphlet’s format. An existing brick sculpture pedestal was extended and reconfigured to incorporate seating, functioning both as a display and a bench.
